It would seem counterintuitive to teach happiness to the human race right! Afterall, shortly after birth your smile was a natural phenomenon. Nobody taught you at 3 months of age how to smile or laugh – it naturally appeared when you sensed something pleasant. Happiness is a natural energy that resides within you, just like fear, hatred, anger, jealousy, grief are different emotional energies that reside there too. As you have grown in age, you have decided which emotional energy to make more prevalent in your life!
As a toddler, you were filled with innocence and almost everything made you smile and feel exhilarated. Remember the times you clapped your hands and danced and sang and found everything around you so beautiful and wondrous? The flowers, the ants, the birds, your family. Remember the times you would have “make-belief” play time and be the happy cop or the robber, the happy teacher or the mum.
As a young school goer your self-esteem started being impacted by the people around you and you started reshaping yourself either to fit in or to stand out or even to simply be invisible. You were possibly part of the statistic that says 80% of primary school students have a positive self-esteem.
Growing into a teen, the “happy you” started struggling again and a part of you asked, “who should I be?” You may have stayed true to you or you may have constricted into conflict of who you need to be or should be, or you became something that you did not want to be. At this point you may have become part of the stats that say that only 20% of teens retain their self-esteem.
Stepping into the working world, your circumstances continued to shape you for the big league. The dream of the high-profile job, the perfect partner to marry, the perfect children to rear… and somewhere along this journey you may have become the statistic that says only 5% of adult people retain their self- esteem, their sense of purpose and ultimately their intrinsic happiness. Are you that 5% or the 95% who have lost their self-esteem and happiness?
And now, what do you say when you ask yourself, “what happened to me?” You probably say something like, “Life happened!”
Life has indeed happened to give you the opportunity today to stop and reflect back, take the lesson and start re-igniting that naturally happy toddler again. It’s in your genes to be happy and if your happy genes are not all that strong, then know that science has cracked the happiness code and we are going to reveal to you, ways in which changing your habits creates new neural pathways in your brain, releases more happy chemicals in your body naturally, alters your happy DNA and leads you to experiencing being resilient, mindful and well and feeling Simply Happy for NO Reason!!
